A first in-studio class comes with a small pile of worries — what do I bring, what do I wear, what if I don't know what I'm doing? Good news: almost none of it matters, and we've got most of it covered. Here's everything you need, so the only thing left to do is turn up.
What to bring
Genuinely, just yourself. Mats and props are provided in studio, so there's no kit to buy before you start. A few things make it nicer:
- A water bottle, if you like one nearby.
- A hair tie, and maybe a small towel.
- Anything specific your body likes — glasses off, a particular layer for resting.
That's it. If you own a mat you love, bring it — but you don't need to.
What to wear
Comfortable clothes you can move and breathe in — leggings or joggers, a top that won't ride up when you fold forward. Layers help: you'll warm up as you move and cool down in the still, restful part at the end, so something to pull on for that is welcome. Bare feet are standard on the mat, so no special footwear needed.
When to arrive
Aim to arrive about ten minutes early. It gives you time to find the room, set up a spot, meet your teacher, and settle your breath before you begin — so class starts calm rather than rushed. If it's your first time, arriving a touch earlier still is never a bad idea.
What a first class is like
Relaxed, and entirely at your own pace. Every posture is offered with easier alternatives, and there's no expectation to keep up with anyone — the person next to you is focused on their own mat, not yours. Do tell the teacher before class about any injuries, pregnancy, or anything they should know, so they can offer you the right options. Then simply follow along, rest whenever you need to, and let the class do the rest.
